Lohrey School Community Officer SummaryIncreasing personal safety for students.IssueSexual assaults on students.Identification and prioritisationThe school and the local community identified and prioritised the issue after 14-year-old boy assaulted a 6-year-old girl in the school grounds. Neither student was a pupil of the school but both lived locally. Police, parents of students attending the school, the Principal, school staff and the Board of Trustees were all involved in discussing the issue.Short-term goalTo reassure the community that: the school was taking the matter seriously measures would be taken to help keep students safe the school grounds were still a safe place for students to play after school and during the weekends. To implement a whole-school approach to child protection through Keeping Ourselves Safe.Long-term goalTo prevent offending of this nature in the school or local community, as measured by checking Police reports. To maintain a personal safety programme so students have the knowledge to keep themselves safe.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school initiated the whole-school approach to child protection as part of its duty of care for its students and the need to keep students and the school environment safe under NAG 5. Community connections The community was also concerned about the incident. Some parents had spoken to teachers and the Principal about their concerns. The school addressed these concerns with the help of Police and by teaching the KOS programme. The board of trustees informed the parents and the school community what the KOS programme was about and how it would be implemented in the school. This was done through newsletters and a parent meeting hosted by the school and run by the SCO, which explained the need for teaching the programme and described its content and Curriculum teaching and learning Classroom teachers, with the help of the SCO, taught Keeping Ourselves Safe to all classes at the start of Term 4 as part of the health curriculum. The programme consisted of three classroom sessions by the SCO and three to five sessions by the classroom teacher.ImpactOne positive outcome was the way the intervention succeeded in reassuring the wider community. Police involvement with the meetings and delivery of Keeping Ourselves Safe was also seen as positive. The students were empowered by learning skills to help them keep safe, recognise danger, and know what to do to get help. Next stepsThe next steps to achieve the long-term goal are to continue: delivering Keeping Ourselves Safe in the school fostering a purposeful relationship between the school and Police, which will include using Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles to address any physical aspects of the schools environment that aid this type of offending. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by having more than one community meeting. Over 20% of the schools community was present at the parent meetings. With so much community support and interest, another meeting would have been prudent so that more of the community could attend.ConclusionThe school is proud of the speed with which it reacted to the need. They identified the problem, analysed what could be done, and organised help from outside agencies (Police). Solutions were put in place and everyone engaged with the intervention.
