Changed attitudes and traffic issues have increased the risk to students.Identification and prioritisationThe changed attitudes and risk to students has been identified by Police, teachers and parents, and from complaints by the local community. The main concerns are riding on the footpath, the age of some of the students who are riding to school, and the choice of roads and streets. The principal took up the role of leading the response.Short-term goalParents will assist students to make good choices when cycling to and from school. Students will gain skills in riding safely.Long-term goalThere will be fewer complaints to the school about student cycling behaviour. There will be a reduction in the number of Police warnings given to student cyclists.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school developed a new policy and guidelines for students cycling to school. Community connections The new guidelines and information from Police were communicated to parents and the wider school community through the school newsletter. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received lessons on the practical and theoretical aspects of cycling and road safety. Students were shown the best places and routes to ride to and from school.ImpactThere was a noticeable change in students cycling behaviour after the intervention. Complaints to the school dropped from 45 in Term 1 to zero later in the year. Fewer warnings were given by the Police. The SCO reported that he had to stop only one or two pupils in the second half of the year.Next stepsThe Board of Trustees will review the policy to ensure that it is still relevant. School staff will monitor students cycling behaviour and the school will institute a system for reporting cycling behavior that does not meet the guidelines. Regular reminders of the cycling guidelines will be published in the school newsletter.ObstaclesThere was some resistance from the community at first, as the behaviour was very entrenched this is how things have always happened in this small town.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by running a cycling programme each year for local students.ConclusionThe school was pleased to partner with Police and other community groups, who have made a measurable impact on the issue.
