IssueA low profile within the school resulted in the school not using Police services that were available to help with student, traffic and school issues as they arose.Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified by Police management, as Police statistics revealed a number of occurrences involving students who attended the school. The senior management of the school agreed to a partnership that included the SCO and the Youth Services Officer.Short-term goalPolice will participate in the schools behaviour management system (e.g., attend deans meetings, be involved in dealing with truancy issues and cases where students have offended in the community, and otherwise help where necessary with problems identified by the school) . Police will be encouraged to develop a higher profile in the school among students and staff by visiting the school often.Long-term goalThe school will perceive Police as a valuable resource for problem solving. Police will be encouraged to support the school and senior management with advice and assistance with home visits.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school's pastoral approach towards the students and wider community included fortnightly deans meetings. The school viewed the SCO as one of its outside help agencies. This fitted in with the schools ethos to seek help from outside agencies as needed, to assist students achieve the best that they can. Community connections Police supported the deans in carrying out home visits and interviews with parents and students, when a Police presence was appropriate. Police supported the school and the local supermarket to investigate shoplifting. Three students were trespassed from a local supermarket. Their families were contacted and they received restorative help. Curriculum teaching and learning Students saw the consequences and outcomes of their behaviours as they were dealt with by Police and the school. ImpactThe deans called on Police a number of times to assist the school to achieve positive outcomes with students and their parents. Next stepsThe next steps are to continue developing the positive relationship with the senior management and the deans, and to establish dedicated weekly meetings for Police-supported school interventions ObstaclesInitially some of the deans and teachers couldn't see the need for Police involvement; the role of the SCO hadnt been fully explained to them by senior management. Some saw the involvement of Police as heavy-handed and felt it might give a bad impression to the wider community. Once deans and staff saw the SCO working positively with pupils and parents, they gained confidence and used the SCO more.ImprovementsIn future it would be better to brief staff more fully on the intervention, explaining the SCO's role and how staff might make use of the SCOs assistance. It would be useful for Police to have more time to spend with the school.ConclusionThe school is proud that it was using every possible outside agency as well as its own recourses to solve problems and help their students.
