Some were incurring large fines and trapping themselves into debt and offending. They need their licences, as they are now responsible for a family and a clean and full drivers licence and be work-ready.Identification and prioritisationThe staff and principal were aware how the students came to class. They were concerned for the safety of the students and their children, and wanted to keep them out of the financial trap of incurring fines. When contacted, parents confirmed that students were driving without a licence, in some cases with their children in the car. Of the six students who were identified, four admitted to driving without a licence. Police had forbidden one student from driving. Short-term goalTo help the six identified students get their learners licences. To have no students driving to school without the appropriate licence. Long-term goalTo help the six identified students get their restricted licence. All six will sit their full drivers licence test when they are old enough to do so.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school prioritised driver licensing as part of the school curriculum. The school paid the learners licence test fee for the six students. Community connections The local licensing agency was contacted to help with the test day, and provided a reader for two of the girls. The SCO and a Road Safety Southland facilitator supported the students on the day of their test by transporting and accompanying them. The students parents were very thankful to the school, Police and Road Safety Southland for their help. They supported the students by giving them computer time at home and buying them the sample tests from the Automobile Association. Curriculum teaching and learning The SCO and a partner gave a presentation on road safety issues. The SCO and the schools local road safety partner (Road Safety Southland) combined to present four lessons to help prepare the students for the learners licence test.ImpactAll the students who sat the licence test passed it. All the students gained a great sense of achievement and were greatly encouraged in their studies. Teachers reported that they were very up-beat about their learning after their success in the drivers test. The principal reported that only one of the students continued to breach the terms of her licence. She was spoken to and warned.Next stepsThe school will encourage the six students on to the next step of their licence by offering to pay for their next test if their attendance is high. The school and the SCO will run the programme next year with a new group of students.ObstaclesThe main obstacle has been to gain sufficient funding for the students to sit the test and to continue with the next step, and for driver training for the practical test. Some students may continue to breach their licence conditions.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by providing practical driver training.ConclusionThrough this intervention, the school has partnered with Police and other community groups and made a measurable impact on the issue. In the past the unit has funded the girls to sit their learners licence test and has given them time in school to sit the practice tests. However, the results of this approach have been poor. The school is now committed to having outside 'experts' come in and present. Student engagement has increased because of the students success in the programme.
