Identification and prioritisationThe principal was concerned that the students were not very town/street wise about walking and cycling, and felt it was important for them to receive some road safety education. Some parents had mentioned their concern that students were a bit blas about walking and cycling in the quiet community.Short-term goalStudents will understand road rules and practise safe cycling riding skills. Students will gain knowledge of and practice in safe walking. (This was measured by observation by parents, Police and members of the community. Knowledge and skills were also observed during the school camp, which was held at a busy township outside the district and where students had the opportunity to gain more confidence and use their knowledge for safe walking and safe cycling.) Parents/caregivers will be more aware of safe cycling and safe walking practices and the legal requirements for bicycles and helmets.(This was measured by discussion and feedback.) Long-term goalStudents will keep themselves safe on and around the roads, both at home and in other, busier communities.(This was measured by observation by the community and Police and by discussion and feedback from the students.) Parents/caregivers will be good role models, will be more knowledgeable about road safety and will educate their children on road safety.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school completed the risk analysis and management forms for the safe walking and safe road cycling exercises. The school reviewed its policies and procedures for road safety, adding a recommendation that students be 10 years of age and older before being allowed to cycle to and from school. All cyclists must have a road worthy bicycle and wear a helmet and high-visibility vest or backpack. Teaching staff were briefed by the SCO and took part in the programme with the students. Lessons were reiterated and reinforced while the students attended the school camp. With support from Police the school arranged for more road signage to make tourist motorists more aware of the school zone. Community connections The school worked with parents/caregivers to ensure that the students had safe, roadworthy bicycles and helmets. The SCO gave parents/caregivers information about the safety and legal requirements for bicycles, and how to correctly fit a cycle helmet. Parents/caregivers were involved in the practical safe walking and safe road cycling exercises. Some of the schools neighbours who were at home on day of practical road cycling were advised that students would be cycling on the road. The school wrote to the district council seeking support for extra signage and ongoing traffic monitoring by the local Police officer. Curriculum teaching and learning Lessons provided by school staff and the SCO included: safe cycling theory (e.g., helmets, bicycles and basic road rules) practical cycling on a court (e.g., steering around obstacles, using brakes safely, hand signals, looking over the shoulder and fun activities where students rode over ramps and a ladder). Senior students participated in safe cycling on the road, which included a written assessment for each student, made available to parents. Junior students participated in safe walking theory and practice. Students educated the community on the importance of wearing cycling helmets by making posters to be put up in the community. Students became role models in road safety and encouraged others. The school also implemented  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe with Police presentations to teachers and parents and teaching two lessons per class. Police also provided training for the schools bus wardens.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, students became more confident and aware of the road safety issues around them. During the school camp staff observed that students were more confident and demonstrated safer walking and cycling practices. This has continued in their own community.Next stepsThe next step is for the local Police to ensure the adults and students are obeying road rules and wearing helmets when cycling.ObstaclesAs the school is 316 km away from the SCOs base, visits needed to be carefully planned to cover as much as possible in each session. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by giving the students more input into how they would like their road education to work. Involving them at the start would allow them to identify concerns about road safety in their area and suggest ways in which everyone could work together to address them.ConclusionThe school is proud of how students supported each others safety on the school camp. Parents could see that they were more confident and aware of road safety. The school was very happy with the support it received from the Police for the road safety education and KOS.
