IssueGloriavale Christian Community School is a private school on the West Coast. This is a rural isolated area. The community members spend most of their time at Gloriavale, but they do also come into the wider community. Due to isolation the students did not know basic road rules, and didnt fully appreciate the dangers of walking, cycling and driving. Some parents also lacked knowledge of road safety, and many did not have their drivers licence. Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified and prioritised in Term 4 2015, when the School Community Officer (SCO) met with the principal and DP to discuss emergency procedures. Concerns were discussed that the students were not fully aware of road safety issues, especially in residential areas, and that they did not know the dangers when walking, cycling or driving. There were also community concerns about an increase of traffic and large vehicles using the local roads. Some members used bicycles as their form of transport, but did not wear helmets and had a low level of proficiency in basic cycle safety skills. Short-term goalThe community (especially students) to gain more knowledge, education and support in relation to road safety. The community to gain the trust to work with the Police, and to support them with road safety education.Long-term goalThe students will demonstrate that they can be safe on the roads, both inside their community and outside The school will make road safety education a regular learning focus. The parents will demonstrate road safety and support the Police.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Discussions to identify the problem areas to be addressed. Teachers reviewed resources and assisted SCO with road safety lessons. Constructed clear, covered and safe walkways to the school. Helmets were purchased. Clear signage installed to identify car parking. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Principal and DP met with community members to introduce the concept, planning and preparation. Ministry of Education, Police supervisors and Child Youth and Family were also advised that Police were working closely with the Gloriavale School. Parents were advised about the road safety programme, and encouraged to become involved to improve the students and their own knowledge and skills. Other Police staff were brought in to assist with the practical safe walking lessons. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely" Travelling Safely lessons provided by the SCO to all classes. Theory lessons for safe walking, cycling and factors that contribute to crashes were held on site at Gloriavale. Practical walking lessons were held in a residential area of Greymouth. Practical cycling lessons were held at Gloriavale. The seniors were transported to Dobson, a residential area, for further experience cycling on the road. Students learned about areas within and around the community that had been identified at risk. Teachers and parents were fully involved, especially for the practical safe walking and cycling lessons. Road safety resources were given to the school.ImpactAll students showed improvement in their cycling skills between their first and second assessments for safe cycling. All juniors showed they could walk safely around a residential area and looking after their buddy. The students learnt more about Greymouth roads and driveways. A good relationship was formed between the Police and Gloriavale students, teaching staff and parents. Next stepsSchool staff and parents to monitor students walking and cycling, and to encourage further outings involving walking, cycling and driving. School staff to continue incorporating road safety education, with lessons scheduled every two years.ObstaclesThe process of building a totally new relationship with school and Police. Principal and DP welcomed Police and facilitated prevention activities. The SCO had to respect the schools beliefs and ways. Parents hadnt had their children work with Police before. The parents thanked Police for working with their children and teaching them to keep safe. Not all students had bicycles, and some were not road legal. Police supplied 12 bicycles and helmets. Travelling a distance away from Gloriavale for the practical lessons. The DP organised vans and extra staff and parents. Rained for some of the practical lessons, but we were able to work indoors.ImprovementsMore involvement from the students in evaluation and in providing evidence of their learning. The older students could educate the younger children in what they had learned. School staff can deliver the programme. However a continuing Police presence will help to build a solid community and Police partnership. Extending the teaching to use HYPERLINK "https://education.nzta.govt.nz/" NZTAs Education Portal resources to weave higher level components of The New Zealand Curriculum (such as the key competencies and citizenship) with the learning area content. ConclusionThe school is pleased with its achievement in supporting their community with road safety education, with the engagement of the students during the road safety lessons, and with their improved ability and knowledge of the law. With the relationship formed between the school and SCO, the school has now planned to implement HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe as well.
