IssueStudents were using scooters unsafely within the school grounds, on the streets outside the school, and in the nearby shopping area. Elderly shoppers were frightened by students riding by too close and too fast. Students were also using scooters to kerb jump from the footpath onto the roadway. There were several near misses between scooters and cars. Several other schools were also experiencing these issues and a local intervention was needed.Identification and prioritisationThe school approached the local SCO for advice in late 2013. Discussions took place between the school and the local road safety advisor, who was an expert in her field. Together with the schools senior school travel plan coordinator she investigated what had been done about scooter safety in other regions, particularly Wellington.Short-term goalEight members of the community with a keen interest in road safety will be trained in all aspects of safe scooter use.Long-term goalThese trained personnel will then provide the same tuition to schools as required, during 2014 and beyond.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school and its community agreed that scooter use was increasing every year and so was the need to manage it safely within a school setting. The trainees were given material to study and asked to examine and report on local conditions. Community connections The issue was discussed with the local council, which designed and painted new road markings on the street between the school and the local shopping area. These are the first of their type in New Zealand, and provide a designated pathway for scooters between the footpath and standard car parks. Scooters now use this area instead of the footpaths, improving safety for all users. The local  HYPERLINK "http://get-moving.org.nz/helpful-stuff/ride-on/" Ride On team, who offer tuition on bicycles, agreed to provide training and advice. This was another example where local people with an active interest in road safety supported the local school. Curriculum teaching and learning Two 90-minute sessions were held with selected students.ImpactThe school still receives complaints about students using scooters in the shopping centre, but these are far fewer in number. Behaviour within the school environs has improved markedly. We have a team committed to offering this training. With an active group that supports the school, our community is much better off. The Ride On team has gone on to offer this training to several other schools during 2014.The Nelson City Council received an award for the road marking initiative.Next stepsThe school wants to ensure that these improvements continue over time.ObstaclesThe school encountered no significant obstacles but now has a safety team available to deal with any issues that may arise.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if senior students were involved in the programme from the beginning and encouraged to come up with their own solutions.ConclusionThe school and the SCO have both been encouraged by the positive results that have been achieved. The whole exercise has proved worthwhile. Fewer complaints have reduced the workload of local Police and pedestrians, especially the elderly, are happier.
