Identification and prioritisationThis issue was identified in July 2014 when two senior students, both members of Students Against Dangerous Driving (SADD), approached Police about highlighting their message to fellow students. It was agreed that the intervention should be held immediately before the school ball. The students suggested a mock crash. The school leadership agreed that the idea had merit and saw the value for students in interacting with road safety professionals.Short-term goalTo help students think about their behaviours, primarily in helping others to make good choices about cars and alcohol. Long-term goalTo bring about a positive change in students attitudes to the consequences of mixing alcohol and vehicle use. To empower and motivate students to spread these messages to others. To demonstrate that Police, Fire Service and St John Ambulance support SADD. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The demonstration took place within the school grounds during lunch time. The students advertised the event at school assemblies. Community connections Key SADD members met with representatives of Police, Ambulance and Fire Service to discuss what needed to be done and what role each service would provide. Each service arrived in response to a phone call and treated the scene as if it was real. Curriculum teaching and learning Student groups formed within the school, held discussions prepare a plan for the intervention and wrote a proposal which they submitted to school management. The SADD committee wrote a script that contained key messages about stopping the misuse of alcohol and being a good mate. Drama students became the actors. Roles were varied and carefully thought out. The demonstration even included the reactions of the victims parents.ImpactThe school ball was highly successful, withno issues of note involving alcohol. There were no instances of negative driving behaviour.Next stepsSomething quite different may be done in the future.ObstaclesNo obstacles were encountered. This intervention was successful because the students organised everything themselves. They took ownership and showed that they could achieve a professional result.ConclusionThe school is proud of the fact that the students organised everything themselves. They took ownership and showed that in spite of their youth they could achieve a professional-level result. The messages given were by students for students. Other young people at the school who witnessed this may be inspired to give it a go themselves.
