Theft of school property.Identification and prioritisationParents and teachers expressed concerns about youths wandering onto school grounds and entering classrooms when students werent present, but staff were still on-site. There was a theft of the school caretakers purpose-built trailer. Students were aware of youths on school grounds, which caused anxiety and fear of being hurt or unsafe.Short-term goalIn Term 4 that there will be no uninvited youths wandering onto the school grounds, and no reports of theft of school property.Long-term goalIn 2017 that there will be no more than three reports of uninvited persons on school grounds causing fear or damage.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Senior management reviewed and practised lockdown procedures, including how to report when youths on grounds. Police did regular foot patrols in the area before and after school. The teachers on duty were increased. Parents were more proactive in monitoring their childrens whereabouts. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) A memo was sent to parents advising them about the issue of uninvited youths on school grounds. They were asked to be aware of where their children were, and to report any concerns or potential issues. A community patrol was organised to provide extra security for the school grounds. Principal, teachers and Police provided prevention advice to parents and students, as well as information regarding progress on the Police investigations. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Teachers and the School Community Officer delivered HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe to students, who used this to assess the risks and safety of their school environment. Students worked in groups on ways to make themselves and the school safer, and presented their findings back to their classmates.ImpactPolice arrested and charged the person responsible for the trailer theft, and the trailer was returned to the school. While the SCO was in class with students, an uninvited youth walked on school grounds. The lockdown procedure was activated, and Police advised, who apprehended the youth. He was trespassed from the school grounds for two years. Since August 2017 there have been no further incidences of uninvited persons or thefts on the school grounds. School staff now feel safer in their school, and thanked Police for the prevention activities and actions undertaken. Parents and students feel safer knowing these measures were put in place for their protection. There has been a significant decline in parent contact to local Police.Next stepsTo develop and practise lockdown procedures. To maintain staffing levels for security of the school and students. In two years, to implementing Keeping Ourselves Safe again.ObstaclesCost and time in Police resourcing to ensure the safety of students at school. Police staff were busy and under-resourced to immediately respond to uninvited persons on school grounds.ImprovementsAs a result of the earlier mentioned lockdown activation, staff have indicated that a change of locks is required on some of the classroom doors. The school have identified that the current intercom system does not meet their requirements, and so a new communication system will be considered. For other interventions of this type, the school could consider enabling student action by using Polices Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) resource, HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/responsible-citizens/safer-schools" Safer Schools. ConclusionThe school community of staff and students feel that their sense of security has been re-established. They are encouraged by the fact that they are well supported by Police and volunteers, and through having ownership of their space, they feel safer in their environment.
