It was identified from a range of data sources including: school community meetings Positive Behaviour For Learning (PB4L) data referral to BOT for suspensions/stand downs/exclusions survey of students.Short-term goalTo increase reporting of cyberbullying by students. Long-term goalTo decrease the amount of reports of cyberbullying and offending. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment Policies related to bullying were reviewed, and one on online bullying was developed. PLD was developed and offered to teachers, led by the DP using teaching strategies and activities from  HYPERLINK "http://www.netsafe.org.nz/" NetSafe. A reporting and recording system was developed. A drop-box system was made available for students to report without naming themselves. A reward system was created to encourage reporting. Procedures for lunchtime supervision were reviewed. Local Police were invited to walk through the school at lunchtime. Restorative practices were enhanced. A panel of three use the no blame approach. The views of the victim are presented to the offender. The offender is encouraged to put it right. Previously there wasn't a plan for students coming from schools that were not feeder schools. The school has now developed a transition plan for new students, where they sign a behaviour contract when interviewed by the Principal. Community connections Parents were informed about social reporting at interviews during the year. Principal led collaboration and parental communications. The 0508NetSafe reporting line was introduced. Curriculum teaching and learning A range of resources from HYPERLINK "http://www.netsafe.org.nz/"  Netsafe were delivered to some students. Resources included Tagged, At a Distance, Let's Fight it Together. Teachers ran these activities in their curriculum programme. Tutor teachers discussed shared values with students, and how these apply to cyberbullying. Students painted large murals on school buildings. Leadership Through League was investigated. Senior students attended X-Roads expo. Police attended Careers Day.ImpactThe short-term goal was achieved, with an estimated 10% increase in reports by students about cyberbullying. Next stepsThe next steps to achieve the long-term goal are to continue the response activities as required.Obstacles A change in principals during the year caused some concern, with three different people filling the chair. Initially students closed ranks and did not tell about cyber issues, but a reward system successfully encouraged more reporting. ImprovementsTo make the intervention more effective, it would have been worthwhile to involve students more in planning and implementation.ConclusionThe school is pleased because they had a good year with the improved behaviour of students, after a change in leadership.
