Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school reviewed its policies on bullying and developed a policy on cyberbullying. Professional learning and development was developed and offered for teachers. The deputy principal led teaching strategies and activities from  HYPERLINK "http://www.netsafe.org.nz/" NetSafe. The school developed a system for reporting and recording incidents of cyberbullying. Students could use a drop-box system to report incidents without naming themselves. A reward system was created to encourage reporting. Procedures for supervising students at lunchtime were reviewed. Local Police were invited to walk through the school at lunchtime. Restorative practices were enhanced. A panel of three operate the process, which uses the the no-blame approach. The views of the victim are presented to the offender, who is encouraged to put things right. Previously the school did not have a plan for students who came from schools that were not feeder schools. The school developed a transition plan for new students, in which they sign a behavior contract when interviewed by the principal. Community connections Parents were informed about social reporting at interviews during the year. The principal to lead collaboration and parental communications. Curriculum teaching and learning Resources from HYPERLINK "http://www.netsafe.org.nz/"  Netsafe (At a Distance, Let's Fight It Together) were delivered to some students. Teachers received professional learning and development on these resources and included the activities in their curriculum programmes. Tutor teachers discussed shared values with students and how these applied to cyberbullying. Students designed and painted school murals, which were placed as reminders in isolated areas around the school.ImpactThere has been an estimated 10% increase in the number of cyberbullying incidents reported by students. ObstaclesInitially students closed ranks and did not tell teachers about cyber issues. However, the reward system encouraged more reporting.ImprovementsIt would have been worthwhile to involve students more in the planning and implementation of the intervention.ConclusionThe school is pleased because of the improved behaviour of students in 2014.
