Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school's social worker has introduced three walking school bus routes to get students safely to and from school. The members of the school traffic safety team were trained to ensure consistent safe crossing procedures for all students going to and from school. A school travel plan was developed. All relevant school policies were reviewed and updated. A new crossing point was installed near the school. All staff were made aware of the walking school bus and actively encouraged students and their whnau to use it. Staff monitoring school patrols actively encouraged students and whnau to use the correct crossing points. Community connections Family and whnau were informed about the walking school bus through newsletters, and have been eager to support this initiative. Hutt City Council facilitated the development of a school travel plan and coordinated parking wardens to patrol areas around the school. Police were asked to monitor traffic behaviour around the school environment. Hutt City Council engineers, the school and Police worked together to make the area safer by installing a new crossing point near the school. Curriculum teaching and learning The curriculum plans for junior students included road safety and used activities based on lesson ideas from Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safety" Road Safety resources. Students taking part in the walking school bus were given road safety training. Senior students were actively encouraged to model safe walking practices.ImpactThis intervention has increased student safety by organising walking school buses and encouraging students to use them. Having started with one walking school bus at the beginning of the year, the school now operates four. Parents/whnau using the walking school buses have also said that they feel happier that students are walking safely together. More communication with family/whnau through school newsletters has increased the number of students using the walking school bus.Next stepsFurther data (e.g., feedback from parents and students) is needed on the safety of the crossing. The school council, walking school bus leaders, the principal and the SCO need to use the data to create a compelling case for an engineering solution by the Hutt City Council.
