Attendance records showing large numbers of unexplained student absences. Incident recording on the school's behaviour management information system (KAMAR), and from the Deans/DP Target List. Prioritisation to address these issues included school management, BOT and Police.Short-term goalTo improve the attendance of students from 149 stand-downs last year to 140. To reduce or eliminate unacceptable behaviour in class.Long-term goalTo have positive school relationships and achievements that will lead to a safer school and community environment, with: less incidents of unacceptable behaviour reported aiming for a reduction of 5% throughout the year less stand-downs aiming for a 5% reduction throughout the year.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment Behaviour management and attendance policies and procedures were reviewed. Staff reviewed safety practices in the school. Lunchtime supervision by staff was reviewed, with greater teacher visibility. Restorative practices were enhanced in the school. Ongoing professional development over student behaviours took place, with RTLBs supporting teachers with behaviour management strategies. Community connections Parents received regular positive information on how the school is addressing behaviour and attendance issues. The local mall management were notified of all teacher-only days so they were aware when students would not be attending school. Police Youth Aid were invited to attend Section 27 stand-down meetings. Police Youth Aid were invited to attend Restorative Practices meetings and to support interventions with alternative actions and youth development. Community Police Officers were tasked to visit malls and parks for students not at school, and inform the Attendance Service. Curriculum teaching and learning The school incorporated a range of programmes into their curriculum, including HYPERLINK "http://www.rockandwater.co.nz/" Rock and Water and ASPIRE. The school re-trained a group of students in Years 10-12 in Narrative Co-Mediation. Students with a problem can ask for a mediation, and two mediators will help them to sort out whatever has gone wrong. The process follows the principles of Narrative Therapy in seeking a non-blame approach, in which the problem is the problem rather than a person. It also looks at peoples values and beliefs, common ground and new alternative ways of being rather than repeating old behaviours that dont help. So far 32 students have gone through mediation.ImpactAs a result of this intervention there has been an improvement in behaviour amongst students. There were less stand-downs compared to last year (149 in 2015 and 141 in 2016). School Attendance Rates: days 80.8%, Periods 71.4%. There was a noticeably decreased amount of phone calls from shopkeepers.Next stepsTo carry on with the same concepts as in the plan.ObstaclesChallenges with busy schedules. Having key leaders or team members leave, or maintaining the year-long goal focus. ImprovementsTo keep up the network with agencies to share information. To keep in regular contact with the local community who see students in their environment when they could/should be at school (e.g. shopkeepers).ConclusionThe school is proud of the way the community, Police and school staff have been proactive to address an issue that benefits all. There has been a shared approach to issues arising, enabling all parties to work better together. The School Student Services Manager has said: Every child who leaves Student Services always says thanks thankyou or cya. The kids are just happier all round. They bowl in to tell us positive stuff and I am not referring negative on to counsellors or Deans/DPs as much as I have in previous years. Intermittent truancy is down and those who truant seem to be the same select few who are pulling the stats down. We dont have the fights like we had 3-5 years ago. The school just feels different, more settled and I for one have had a great year. It is a pleasure and privilege to work with these kids. So there has been a definite change in the schools culture. I wanted to let you know how pleased I am with the changes I have seen.
