Prioritising to address these issues included school management, BOT and Police. Short-term goalTo improve the attendance of students and reduce or eliminate unacceptable behaviour in class.Long-term goalTo have positive school relationships and achievements that will lead to a safer school and community environment, with: less incidents of unacceptable behaviour less stand-downs.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment Behaviour management and attendance policies and procedures have been reviewed. Staff have reviewed safety practices in the school. Lunchtime supervision by staff has been reviewed, with greater teacher visibility. Restorative practices have been enhanced in the school. Ongoing professional development over student behaviours, with RTLBs supporting teachers with behaviour management strategies. Community connections Parents have received regular positive information on progress about how the school is addressing behaviour and attendance issues. Police Youth Aid attended restorative practices meetings and supported the intervention with alternative actions and youth development. Community Police Officers have been tasked to visit malls and parks for students not at schools, and inform the Attendance Service. Curriculum teaching and learning The school has incorporated and range of programmes into their curriculum, including Rock and Water and ASPIRE, with a goal of getting students to take action and demonstrate positive behaviour. Teachers consistently follow school protocols developed through PB4L in the classrooms.ImpactAs a result of this intervention, there is noticeable improvement in behaviour amongst students, and improved attendance and fewer stand-downs.Next stepsThe next steps are to carry on with the intervention plan next year and to have better communication amongst stakeholders, enabling us to achieve our goal better.ObstaclesBusy schedules are a challenge, as is learning from trial and error rather than from good case material.ImprovementsChanges to make the intervention more effective would be more regular contacts with the local community (e.g. shop keepers), who see students in their environment when they could/should be at school.ConclusionThe school is proud of the way the community, Police and school staff have been proactive to address an issue that benefits all. There has been a shared approach to issues arising, enabling all parties to work better together.
