Identification and prioritisationThe school was approached in 2013 by local iwi organisations who wanted to support Mori youth and others who could benefit from mentoring around resilience, identity, confidence and leadership qualities. Short-term goalTo support Year 7/8 students via resilience education through the Ka Rewa programme. Long-term goalTo increase students confidence in their classroom and syndicate, demonstrated by leading Karakia, Waiata or Mau Rakau, thanking guest speakers, attending class (decrease in truancy), and being acknowledged for their positive behaviour. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) The school supported the students to participate in the Ka Rewa programme (a local hauora Mori health service programme that builds, supports and grows resilience in Mori youth) and to gain confidence in Tikanga Mori. The intervention included outside agencies with trained facilitators. Used a range of EOTC venues that best suited the lessons, such as Pukaha - Mt Bruce, Henley Lake, and Fitness Centres. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Collaboration between multiple organisations, including the school, Te Hauora Runanga o Wairarapa (Ka Rewa resilience programme), Rangitane: local iwi facilitators (Kotiro programme), Waka/Cross Fit, Police School Community Officer, DOC Pukaha, Mt Bruce. Whnau/parents had to confirm their commitment to the programme for Ka Rewa before students could participate. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Ka Rewa facilitators guided students to seek whakapapa knowledge, set goals, and to act as good role models for whnau and other students. Cross Fit/Waka emphasized the importance of health and fitness, and knowledge of identity by tying in with Waka Ama. Pukaha  Native plants and animals of New Zealand helped students gain an appreciation and respect for our reserves. The Police School Community Officer supported students on how to become resilient to deal with frustration. They gained an understanding of laws around behavior for both youth and adults. The involvement of Police built positive relationships with youth. ImpactStudents have built confidence from being able to recite their pepeha/karakia, speak of where they are from, share and model health and fitness, make a meal for their whnau, show gratitude to the community with involvement in community projects, gain individual and whnau support around health and wellbeing, know more about decision-making and the law from agencies, and become role models for their school and whanau. ObstaclesSome Police members needed to be involved at the planning stage to commit them to take part, and to gain better knowledge of the intervention so as to support it better. Clashes with other school activities meant re-scheduling was required, often at short notice. ImprovementsAs the workshops were run by other agencies, their findings have had changes implemented. Facilitator feedback has been given by some of the Police staff involved, and the course content and communication will have changes made for 2017. ConclusionThis has been a great example of different agencies working together, with Police taking a positive supporting role. Two different workshops are offered at the school that Police were approached to be part of. Communication and planning have been directly with the programme leads. Being able to work beside agencies in the community has given an added appreciation to what is involved to support young people. Engaging with the youth, some being at-risk, has helped build positive rapport. The SCO noticed students appearing more comfortable in the presence of Police. Police support of safety education is still offered on an annual basis to the whole school.
