IssuePrevious issues involving students and young people from the area driving without the correct licence type, or without a licence at all. Identification and prioritisationThe school management team identified these issues in 2014 through information received from staff and pupils. Confirmation was gained via Police and Wairarapa Road Safety Council statistics from crashes, and from tickets given for licence breaches. Short-term goalTo support students via education to gain their Learner Licence. Long-term goalTo implement a long term plan that continues within the school curriculum, encouraging students to take control of their driving and their role in society to keep themselves and others safe on our roads. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) Reviewed school policies and procedures relating to students as to whether they can drive a motor vehicle to school. The teacher in charge of the schools  HYPERLINK "https://drive.govt.nz/" Drive programme used a range of teaching tools to encourage student participation, having had previous experience in the old Police Drive Qual resource. Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) Collaboration took place between Police (School Community Officers and Traffic Team), Wairarapa Road Safety Council and Wairarapa Lions for driver mentoring. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) Education plans were trialed in 2015 and added to options in the curriculum in 2016. Curriculum lessons were implemented to enable students to be more successful in obtaining their drivers licences. Opportunities were provided to receive NCEA credits through the educational programme. Police Traffic Sergeant and School Community Officer provided lessons on licence requirements, fines and crashes. Wairarapa Road Safety Council implemented a Driver Education Programme and organisers, and promoted a road safety education workshop. Wairarapa Lions provided mentors to take driving lessons. ImpactApproximately 90 students from Kuranui College took part in 2016. One sat and obtained his Restricted Licence. Figures have yet to be confirmed on the number of students who have obtained their Learner Licences. Next stepsTo continue with the training package, including information on the importance of gaining their drivers licence and deserving to keep it. With support of WRSC and the Moving On Driver mentoring programme, students holding a Learner Licence will graduate to their Restricted. ObstaclesMaintaining student interest seemed to be an issue. However improvements were noted in attitude and student involvement. Changes in schedules made it challenging to use outside facilitators. The mentoring programme involved volunteers and the use of a donated vehicle, which had to fit around scheduled lesson times for three local colleges.ImprovementsFacilitators could be better prepared to facilitate based on the needs of the students involved, adjusting their presentation to keep students engaged. Use could be made of the NZTA and Tertiary Education Commissions  HYPERLINK "https://www.pathwaysawarua.com/pathways/road-code" Pathways Awarua app to engage and extend students in learning the Road Code in their own time. ConclusionThe school was happy with the involvement from students in 2016, and the achievements they made. This workshop option will be available again in 2017. One positive outcome is students being able to obtain work outside Greytown, as they are now able to drive.
