Furminger School Community Officer  SummaryIncreasing students personal safety.IssueThe school wished to address the personal safety of junior primary students at school, at home and in the wider community.Identification and prioritisationThe school was concerned about reports it had received the safety of its students in the greater community. This included abuse within families as well as students being targeted by others at the local shopping centre. Police data, together with consultation with local Police, confirmed this. Short-term goalStudents will know and apply a range of safe behaviours that they use when interacting with other people. Students will support other students who are being abused to seek help. Students will be able to identify when they feel unsafe and report it to someone they trust, who can help.Long-term goalParents, family members and the school community will take responsibility for helping students to avoid abuse. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school reviewed all relevant school policies and procedures, and planned to implement a whole-school approach to personal safety for junior classes. A staff development workshop discussed statistics on child abuse and CYF notifications in the schools area, and introduced  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe, a whole-school-approach to child protection. Community connections Parents were informed about KOS through a newsletter, a parent meeting, and a number of home activities that were part of the classroom lessons. The information encouraged families to discuss matters such as personal strengths, feelings, the students body, touch, saying no, secrets, tricks, asking for help and family safety rules. Police Neighbourhood Policing Team increased foot patrols around the school environment and the nearby shopping centre. The school is being encouraged to report all concerns to tPolice. School staff have commented on their improved sense of well-being through seeing Police in their neighbourhood regularly. Curriculum teaching and learning The school implemented a school-wide child protection education programme based on Police resources from  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe. The teachers taught the programme, which consisted of around 16 sessions in each class. The SCO took part in three sessions in each class, working in partnership with the teacher.ImpactThe students achieved the goals of KOS. The school received several disclosures of abuse from students, some of which related to the issues identified earlier. Next stepThe next steps are for the school to reinforce the learning from KOS, and for the students to raise any issues they have about their safety.ObstaclesFinancial constraints have limited: the schools ability to print the classroom resources from the Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" school portal and Police resourcing for printing KOS resources. As a result, teachers adapted timetables so that they could share resources. Time constraints made it difficult to implement a whole-school approach and fit KOS into an already full school curriculum.ImprovementsThe intervention would have been improved by extending the learning through varied activities such as role plays, a show or display for parents, school newsletter articles to promote successful relationships, and delivering KOS within a school term with a focus on safety. ConclusionThe school is proud of their students engagement in the programme, and of the improved sense of well-being in their school. The programme has had many positive results. It has enabled students to become more open about the situations at home that make them feel unsafe. They have also gained a new respect for Police as people who can care for them and work with the school and community to keep them safe.
