IssueThere were concerns that traffic congestion around the school posed a risk to the safety of students before and after school.Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified as a result of community concern about traffic safety and observations by the principal, Police and teaching staff.Short-term goalTo develop a workable traffic management plan based on collaboration between the relevant parties. Long-term goalTo create an orderly entry and exit from the school in the mornings and afternoons, with safe behaviour by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The schools road safety policy was reviewed, and found to be adequate. A traffic engineering plan was developed that led to the installation of a traffic island. The next step will be to install traffic lights. Engineering and Travelwise staff from Auckland Transport have been involved on an ongoing basis. Community connections Consultation and collaboration included the school principal, the board of trustees, the SCO, Auckland Transport Travelwise staff and engineers, parent representatives and the local MP. Travelwise carried out a comprehensive mobility survey for all students attending the school. The MP supported community action for a safer school environment. Auckland Transport increased parking enforcement for a time. Police also increased the enforcement of driver behaviour for a time. Parents were informed of what the school was doing to increase student safety. Students were given opportunities to practise the skills they had learned.ImpactObservations by Police showed that as a result of this intervention traffic behaviour had noticeably improved within 3 months of the initial planning and consultation meetings, Next stepsPolice and Auckland Transport will continue to monitor the traffic environment, give regular feedback to the school and parents, and provide ongoing road safety education for students.ObstaclesFinancial constraints limited the extent to which Auckland Transport could immediately implement the plan. Parents were also stressed by receiving parking infringement notices when dropping off and picking up their children. ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving students in the decision making process and allowing for more parent consultation.ConclusionThe school is proud that more of its students are cycling, walking and riding scooters to school.
