Police and parents carried out a survey of vehicle numbers in vicinity of the school. Short-term goalTo develop a workable traffic management plan based on collaboration between the relevant parties.Long-term goalTo create an orderly entry and exit from the school in the mornings and afternoons, with safe behaviour by drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. (This will be measured by a follow-up survey.)Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment A traffic engineering plan was developed in consultation with Auckland Transport engineers and parent representatives. The first action was to install bus stopping lanes and traffic lights to manage vehicular and pedestrian flows. Community connections Consultation and collaboration included the school principal, the board of trustees, the SCO, Auckland Transport Travelwise staff and engineers, parent representatives and the local MP. Police increased the enforcement of driver behaviour for a time. Parents helped to identify the problem and were informed of what the school was doing to increase student safety.
