Information about the programme was circulated to the wider community, so that a number of ex-students came along to the classes and subsequently passing their test. The expectation that students would study and test themselves at home had the added benefit of involving older siblings and other family members. As a result, progress and test results often became a matter for the whole family to monitor, and the feedback when students finally passed was extremely encouraging. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) This programme was conducted outside school hours, but with the support of the college and teaching staff. The allocation of NCEA credits for gaining a Learner Licence became an additional incentive for many students. The programme linked to The New Zealand Curriculum, notably the Key Competencies of Managing self, Thinking, and Using language, symbols and texts.ImpactThe short-term goal is being achieved, as measured by: 83 students gaining their Learner, Restricted or Full Licences. This was a massive jump from previous years. 268 NCEA credits gained over the 3 levels. Next stepsThe next steps to achieve the long-term goal are to continue with the programme. ObstaclesSome students had conflicting demands after school, such as sports practice or jobs. In some cases their peers helped them to catch up.ImprovementsData will be gathered to ensure continued progress towards the long-term goal can be measured. Use could be made of the NZTA-endorsed Road Code pathway on the  HYPERLINK "https://www.pathwaysawarua.com/pathways/road-code" Pathways Awarua app. The complex technical language of the New Zealand Road Code means that many young people dont read it, and instead prepare for their test simply by learning to answer the questions. They therefore may not develop a deep understanding of the principles of the Road Code and why some things are the way they are. Pathways Awarua overcomes these limitations, using interactive content to make learning the road rules and learning to drive safely both easy and fun. Once students log in, the app works with or without an internet connection, giving them more opportunities for learning anywhere, anytime not just at school.ConclusionA successful and much appreciated programme, with a very positive social outcome. Personal responsibility is stressed at this college, and by taking ownership of their own learning, and being committing to turn up after school, students demonstrated this in a very practical manner.
