The number of cars and pedestrians coming to the school causes various safety issues, such as students crossing the road at unsafe locations, and unsafe parking and driving. Short-term goalTo increase students knowledge about safety outside the school gate and encourage them to pass that knowledge on to their parents. (This will be measured by observing students and parents road safety behaviour outside the school gate.) Long-term goalTo change motorists and pedestrians attitudes to and practice of road safety outside the school. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school has reviewed its policies and procedures on road safety outside the school gate. Staff developed knowledge and skills in supervising the school traffic safety team and included road safety as a context for student learning. Community connections Various community channels were used to inform parents about the schools road safety policy and its expectations of parent behaviour. With encouragement from a lead teacher, parents have organised a walking school bus. Auckland Transport has worked with the school on a range of initiatives including a Slow down back to school campaign, a scooter safety day, zebra sticks to promote the use of the zebra crossing, and parking wardens to enforce safe driving in the area. Police have supported the school by training the school traffic safety team, giving classroom lessons, and monitoring traffic to enforce safe driver behaviour. Curriculum teaching and learning Students received lessons from the Police Road Safe programme for  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-0-1" years 01 and  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/travelling-safely/road-safe-years-2-3" years 23. The main emphasis was how to stay safe in the car parks, footpaths and driveways in around the school. Students took action for road safety by decorating T shirts and making videos, songs and posters with road safety messages that they presented to parents, teachers and Police at a school assembly.ImpactAs a result of this intervention there was an observed improvement in road safety outside the school gate. Next stepsPolice and the council will continue to monitor driver behaviour. There will be regular communication between the school and parents on how to keep students safe, and ongoing education for students.ObstaclesThe initial obstacle was the reluctance of the parent community to take more responsibility for their children's safety. ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective if parents became more involved. ConclusionThe school is proud of its efforts to increase the safety of its students outside the school gate.
