The school decided to run Loves-Me-Not, a whole-school approach to relationship abuse that includes a workshop for year 12 students. Short-term goalThe effective delivery of a Loves-Me-Not workshop in the school.Long-term goalStudents will have and will encourage healthy relationships. It will become part of the school community ethos that it is OK to ask for help and that violence is not OK. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole school approach included: School ethos and environment The school met with Police to develop a plan to deliver LMN and to consider what else could be done around the school to support the workshop, such as revising school policy, increasing staff capability, indentifying and monitoring places where bullying behaviour is more frequent. The school and Police ensured that there would be dedicated liaison people to manage the implementation between Police, local NGOs and the school. Appropriate school staff were selected as facilitators and trained by Police to facilitate the workshop. Spaces for time out and support were made available during the workshop, in case any students needed it. Community connections The workshop was a collaboration by the school, Police and local NGOs. Facilitators also included local NGOs and staff from different Police teams who had knowledge and experience in relationship abuse and/or family violence. They also attended the training session for facilitators. Parents and the community were told about the workshop by newsletters. Curriculum teaching and learning Loves-Me-Not included learning about healthy and unhealthy relationships and gave students the opportunity to could discuss abuse, consent, and myths about relationships. Students were encouraged to be change agents in their community. However, the school has no examples of this as yet. ImpactAs a result of this intervention students were more willing to discuss the sensitive topics. Several students approached Police later, stating that the workshop was well worth it and they had never been given the chance to talk about the topics before.Next stepsThe next step is keep reinforcing the positive messages the students want to share about having healthy relationships.ObstaclesThe initial obstacle was getting teachers and Police together at the same time to plan the workshop, and the challenge of locating relevant NGOs.ImprovementsThe intervention would be more effective by holding a community meeting to involve parents more through and to select and train the facilitators, including NGOs, earlier.ConclusionThe school is proud that its students had the chance to share and discuss an important personal subject in the school environment.
