Stanko School Community Officer  SummaryIncreasing students personal safety.IssueThe school wished to address the personal safety of its students at school, at home and in the wider community.Identification and prioritisationIn early 2014 the deputy principal met with the SCO to discuss a disclosure by a student of inappropriate sexual behaviour. Both the offender (Student A) and victim attended the school. The intervention was prioritised and developed by school management, the board of trustees and the SCO. Short-term goalTo prevent re-offending by Student A.Long-term goalTo educate all the students about their personal safety when interacting with others. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The school, the SCO, CYF and the Social Worker in Schools discussed ways of educating: all the students about personal safety skills when interacting with others. Student A about appropriate behaviours when interacting with others. All relevant school policies and protocols were reviewed. School staff were rostered to supervise Student A. A staff workshop discussed  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe. The SCO shared: information about child abuse and notifications in their community how teachers could access relevant resources for their class group on the Police School Portal. School staff reviewed the teaching material and planned the lessons in partnership with the SCO. Community connections A meeting was held for parents and caregivers to inform them about  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe a whole-school approach to child protection. A large number of parents, caregivers and extended family members attended. They were encouraged to participate in the programme and reinforce the students learning. During the classroom lessons a range of home activities went home to parents. A few families came into the school during the KOS programme to seek help and support. The  HYPERLINK "http://www.safenetwork.org.nz/" SAFE network provided specialised counselling for Student A, with regular feedback to relevant school staff. The Ministry of Education provided extra funding for a teacher aide to support Student A. Curriculum teaching and learning The school instituted a school-wide child protection education programme based on Police's  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe. The teachers taught the programme, which consisted of about 16 sessions in each class. The SCO took part in three sessions with each class, working in partnership with the teacher. Student A was also trained as a member of the school patrol and given teacher aide support in all lessons.ImpactThe students achieved the goals of Keeping Ourselves Safe and a number of them disclosed abuse. Most disclosures were dealt with by the school and some resulted in CYF notifications. The school has observed that more students now approach staff with their issues. Student A was working well with his peers and became a peer mediator (under supervision).Next stepThe next steps are for the school to continue to build a closer relationship with its community and reinforce to students that they can raise any issues about their safety. The school will continue working with the SCO on any issues that arise.ObstaclesFinancial constraints limited the schools ability to print the  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" classroom resources from the School Portal and Police had limited funds to print these materials. As a result teachers adapted their timetables so that they could share resources. There was also some parental resistance to KOS. One parent did not want their children to do the programme and some parents/caregivers didn't participate in the home activities.ImprovementsThe intervention would have been improved by extending students learning through varied activities such as poster competitions to promote successful relationships.ConclusionThe school is proud of the outcome that has been achieved. At the end-of-year prizegiving Student A was awarded a trophy for the most improved student. He has also attended all of his SAFE counselling sessions and continues to grow as a responsible student.
