School staff practised the procedure to ensure that school was a safe place for the students. A parenting course was run by skilled and qualified staff with support from school staff and the SCO. The school collaborated with local business to fund the course so that it was free for parents. The local council, agencies and businesses collaborated to fund more food in school. Parents were consulted about the parenting course, to ensure they understood the reasoning behind it. The principal wrote to all parents regarding family violence issues and introduced the parenting course. School staff were consulted to ensure that there was childcare available for parents who attended the course. Caterers were engaged to feed all course participants and their children. The school regularly engaged with parents. Curriculum teaching and learning The Police  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping" Keeping Ourselves Safe programme was delivered to the whole school so that all students would know what to do in an unsafe situation.ImpactReports of family violence and child abuse notifications decreased. There was a reduction in truancy and absences from school. Students were achieving at school. The perception was of a safer school community and that school was a happier and safer environment for students to learn in.Next stepsThe intervention will be reviewed, improved, and repeated each year. ObstaclesThere was some resistance from parents who were worried that they would get into trouble. This was reduced by assurances from the SCO, school staff and the facilitators.ImprovementsThe intervention could be improved by using facilitators from different cultures.ConclusionUnfortunately this intervention did not take place in 2015, as the Fono could not commit staff to the programme.
