IssueThere was an increase in the number of year 9 students who were engaging in harmful relationship behaviour, especially cyber-bullying and the sharing of inappropriate images. A few students had received detentions and one was suspended. The college was also moving towards having the students bring their own devices.Identification and prioritisationThe issue was identified by reports made by students of harmful relationship behaviour. Parents had also been complaining to the school. A student survey showed that students felt unsafe online. Police data showed an increase of bullying in the local community. The school also found that this behaviour was linked with truancy and affected the students attendance figures. The Board of Trustees also noted an increase in suspensions.Short-term goalWithin the first few weeks of the intervention, the school system will show an increase in reported cases from 12 to 20.Long-term goalOver time the school system will show a decrease in reported incidents, from 20 to down to 8 per term.Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment The principal and the Board of Trustees reviewed the schools policy on bullying and abusive behaviour and changed the student reporting system, which was made easier to use. The deputy principal approached the SCO to devise lessons on digital citizenship. The programme was presented to and reviewed by senior management and selected students. All staff were informed what to do should any students disclose cyber abuse. Community connections Senior management and the SCO organised a parent and staff meeting with presentations by  HYPERLINK "https://www.netsafe.org.nz/" NetSafe and the SCO. The principal communicated with parents about responsible digital citizenship through the school newsletter. Curriculum teaching and learning The SCO and senior management ensured that the intervention created an environment of Its OK to tell for students who disclosed.ImpactThere was a decrease in incidents of cyber-bullying reported in the SMS. Reports of parental concern decreased. Truancy decreased. Students were surveyed after the intervention and results showed that they felt safer online. The Board of Trustees reported no new referrals for suspension for online behaviour. Police data showed a decrease in bullying in the community.Next stepsThe intervention will be reviewed and run again in Term 1 of 2016 for the new students in year 9. The Board of Trustees will review the impact of the schools policy. Feedback from students will be provided to parents and other interested parties.ObstaclesSome parents believed it was the teachers role to educate their children in online safety, whereas some teachers believed it was not their role to educate the students, but that of the parents. Clearly it is a shared responsibility. After the meeting the parents who attended had a better understanding of their role; and after PLD the teachers resistance was reduced.ImprovementsThe intervention would be improved by involving the students in gathering information and developing ideas. The gathered data would then be entered into the school system. ConclusionThe school was pleased at how this intervention developed effective partnerships between the school, Police, Netsafe and other community groups, and made a measurable impact on the issue.
