This ethos aligns with students' ability to recognise abuse and take action to prevent it. The school reviewed its child protection policy and considered it adequate. Parents were kept informed throughout the programme by way of homework exercises that reinforced the main aspects of the classroom lessons. Curriculum teaching and learning The school instituted a school-wide child protection education programme based on Police KOS resource s.ImpactThe range of family violence and personal safety initiatives that were run at the time raised community awareness about family violence, at least for the duration of the campaign. This was measured by anecdotal feedback from the community. It is too early yet to say if the there were more referrals as a result of delivering KOS.Next stepThe next steps are to build the sustainability of  HYPERLINK "http://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/keeping-1" Keeping Ourselves Safe so that it is repeated every 1 or 2 years, and to maintain regular interaction with the Family Violence Prevention Network so that school community initiatives can have more impact.ObstaclesSome staff were reluctant to be involved in Keeping Ourselves Safe when the idea of delivering the programme was first introduced at an all-of-staff meeting.ImprovementsGiven the size of the schools staff and the potentially contentious issues involved, it would have been more appropriate to introduce KOS at syndicate meetings, which would have allowed for more open discussion. More specific targets should be considered. For example, the long-term goal, although obviously aiming at a reduction overall, did not set a specific target. Also, a method for measuring any increase in referrals could have been planned and implemented as part of the intervention process.ConclusionThe school is proud of delivering KOS as part of a general community initiative, and that its students have been empowered to recognise and take action to stop abuse.
