Identification and prioritisationPolices DriveQual had been run in previous years, and found to be effective and well-liked. The classroom teacher involved and has the strong support of the principal. Short-term goalTo achieve the learning outcomes and gain 12 NCEA credits.Long-term goalTo develop positive and responsible attitudes to driver safety, and thereby reduce the incidence of road trauma for this group. Prevention activitiesActivities that occurred within a whole-school approach included: School ethos and environment (policies; skilled staff; safe environment) [to be confirmed] Community connections (consultation; collaboration; model parents) The school collaborated with Police on the programme, following extensive planning. Curriculum teaching and learning (taking action for: myself; my friends; my community) DriveQual was taught to raise awareness of the issues relating to driver safety, and to give students, who werent in mainstream classes, the incentive to gain up to 12 credits ( Level 1 and 2). The school challenged learners to solve problems using differentiated learning styles. DriveQual aligned well with this approach. Learners progressed through the course material at their own pace, seeking guidance from the facilitator as required.ImpactThe short-term goal was achieved, as the students gained 12 credits which was a credible achievement. Next stepsThe next step towards the long-term goal of attitudinal shift and responsible driving habits is to build on the trusting relationship established with Police over the duration of DriveQual. This has already led to students feeling confident enough to broach a host of social and personal issues in the context of a safe classroom environment. Meetings have already been held with the principal, classroom teacher and senior staff to ensure DriveQual continues next year.ObstaclesTime allocation is always an issue, and has to be managed effectively.ImprovementsSome modules have updated with Study Guides and Assessments, and these will need to be purchased for next year.
